This wonderful hand-stitched tapestry created by Doreen Yemmah, Threads of Blessing artist, measures 9 x 9 inches and illustrates family life and work in Uganda. A man and woman work outside two round thatched huts. The man is gardening as the woman completes chores while overseeing a small child. Goats and chickens graze nearby. Doreen uses a cool dark color palette for the scene and carefully stitched patterns in tones of brown, to articulate the circular thatched roofs. The subtle variation of value and the French knots used in the tree's foliage also create texture and movement.   The strength of the composition lies in the large swaths of color that create the ground and sky.

Doreen lives in Gulu, a town located in northern Uganda. This area has struggled for many years due to conflicts with the Lord’s Resistance Army from South Sudan. Many families have lost loved ones and struggle to survive.

“First of all, I want to thank the Almighty God who enables us to start this project of Threads of Blessing.  I am really very grateful for the support toward us African women. The project has done a lot for me like paying school fees, caring for my late sister’s children and garden work and feeding family.  May the Almighty God bless you so much for the great love you have shown to us.  Thank you. May the friendship remain forever. Amen.” - Doreen Yemmah
