Unframed Tapestry

A sassy rooster is the star of this hand-stitched work created by Janet Giramia, Nadia/Malakwang, Threads of Blessing artist. The work measures 7 x 7 inches. Janet uses white and different shades of brown to define the bird's feathers. A black contour line further emphasizing the bird's tail, wings, breast and head .  Captured mid-step, the rooster walks toward a bright orange flower with toes buried beneath a carpet of green grass.

Nadia lives in a village called Goli in the district of Nebbi in northwest Uganda.  Nebbi borders Lake Albert to the south, the River Nile to the east, and the Congo to the west.  

Living in a mud hut with a thatched roof, Nadia’s life revolves around caring for her family and crops.  She will use the funds she receives from her needlework to provide education for her children, medical support for herself and her family; seeds or fertilizer for her crops, repairs to her home, or even begin to build a new one and provide for any orphans for whom she cares as a result of poverty,, HIV-AIDS or other illnesses.  

She meets weekly with her fellow needle workers.  The community they have developed through Threads of Blessing encourages each of them and has significantly raised their self-esteem.
